RENT COFFEE TABLE BOOK
The book, lyrics, and production of RENT were at the time, and still are disruptive. This musical follows a group of friends as they tackle obstacles like impending gentrification, poverty, homelessness, HIV/AIDS, and death. I wanted to create a design that marries the structural aesthetic of New York City and the original Rent set with the dynamism of dance and the ability of the characters to adapt to each challenge thrown at them.
My design for Rent pays homage to the original production and every production since. Its simplistic black, white, and bright yellow color palette breaks away from the original show’s colors, and uses the city as color inspiration. I used that color to break up pieces of images and phrases to create disruption in the same way that Larson’s original production did 25 years ago.
